between right and wrong conduct, which, from lack of social educa- tion many fail to comprehend to the detriment of .their own welfare ,
and the happiness of their fellows. There should be & fine discrimi- nation in these things, and extremes should be avoided. It.is well-bal- anced, wisdom-guided acts that should characterize our conduct. "Young ladies," he says, "should remember that a formal intro- duction by a mere friend to some total stranger, for the evening's dance, is not to be considered an introduction that makes such acquaintance permanent," although no gentleman should introduce anyone to a lady who is not worthy of her permanent acquaint- ance. "It is the lady's duty or privilege to recognize the formal acquaintance first, and his privilege to speak or raise the hat only after she has recognized him." There is as much impropriety in being too free and intimate, as in being too reserved, discourteous, seclusive and cold. Well-balanced conduct is best and always proper. This subject is worthy of due consideration, and we should all remember that the aim of the Latter-day Saints is to follow the in- junction that, if there is anything lovely or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things; and we believe in doing good to all men.
