The Wine Cup of Fury

Times and Seasons, vol. 5, pp. 635 to 636

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

There is a solemn idea contained in the command of the Lord to Jeremiah: 'To take [take] the wine cup of his fury at his hand, and cause all the nations to whom I send thee, to drink it. This awful command has yet to be executed, 'for the slain of the Lord' has never been 'from one end of the earth to the other.' If this generation is not the one for the inhabitants of the earth 'to drink and be drunken, and spue [spew] and fall to rise no more;' let some divinely authenticated servant of the Lord say when it will be, for it must come.

On reflection, we think Pollock's words for Death, in his 'Course of Time,' comes very near a reality. He says:

"Earth's cup

Is poisoned: her renown most infamous;

Her gold, seem as it may, is really dust;

Her titles, slanderous names; her praise reproach;

Her strength, an idiot's boast; her wisdom blind;

Her gain, eternal loss; her hope, a dream;

Her love, her friendship, enmity with God;

Her promises, a lie; her smile, a harlot's;

Her beauty, paint, and rotten within; her pleasures;

Deadly assassins masked; her laughter, grief;

Her breasts, the sting of Death; ; her total sum,

Her all, most utter vanity; and all

Her lovers mad; insane most grieviously [grievously];

And most insane, because they know it not."
