# As Suns of August Burn: A Poem

<!-- page:851 -->

AS SUNS OF AUGUST BURN

The suns of August scorch the yellow grain,
  And pale, the hills are wrapped in whiten'd haze
Like islands float the groves above the plain,
  From skies unclouded comes the lambent blaze
The roads are blinding in the floods of light,
  The suns are followed with the burning moons,
Each day but dies to bring as rich a night,
  And at the dawning night in languor swoons.
The far earth-rim that with the haze is cross'd,
  This glowing landscape that is lying near,
One seems my life within the vanish' d past,
  The other as the fervid moments here :

     My soul to feast unto this present turns,
     And love within my heart as August burns !

                             ALFRED LAMBOURNE.
