# In the Uintah’s—One of the Three Lakes at the Head of Lakes Fork

<!-- page:988 -->

988                       IMPROVEMENT ERA.

ciples, aye, even the corner stones of this great nation, viz. , its

political economy, its religion, and the home, most persistently
assailed by those professing great knowledge; and if such teach-
ings continue without interruption, and against the decided pro-
test of an enlightened people, another decade will, I firmly be-
lieve, find this the greatest of all nations under heaven, trembling
in the balance between progression and decadence, with the chances

very much favoring the latter.
       Most pertinently does Emerson say, "the very hopes of man,
fche thoughts of his heart, the religion of nations, the manners
and morals of mankind, are all at the mercy of a new generaliza-
tion."
       And well may we exclaim, "Are we drifting, or going head-
long to destruction?"
